John Harvey Karam, MD

Physician. Scientist. Teacher. Humanitarian. Role model.

Dr. John Harvey Karam was Christopher’s uncle and one of the human models behind MaxwellX. He was a professor of endocrinology and metabolism at UCSF, a clinical investigator, a master clinician, a teacher, and a humanitarian. His work helped shape modern diabetes research. His life showed what knowledge is for.

MaxwellX carries forward the standard he lived: humility, respect, and service. Christopher Hill names Dr. Karam, his uncle, as a role model for MaxwellX.

The humanitarian side of medical truth.

Dr. Karam’s memorial describes a physician beloved by family, fellows, collaborators, patients, and people whose lives he improved. He volunteered with Doctors Without Borders, Flying Doctors, and health fairs serving underserved communities. He gave care to people who had limited access to medicine, and he taught with patience and dignity.

His mission was larger than being right. It was to make medical truth humane.

A scientist who moved between worlds.

UCSF remembers Dr. Karam as a translational scientist: someone who brought clinical insight to basic science and brought basic science back to clinicians. That bridge matters to MaxwellX. The future is built by people who can move between worlds — theory and instrument, model and patient, experiment and system, knowledge and service.

The work.

Dr. Karam’s scientific work helped define major areas of diabetes and metabolism. With Gerald Grodsky and Peter Forsham, he helped show that hyperinsulinemia was associated not only with type 2 diabetes, but also with obesity alone. With Jack Gerich and colleagues, he helped clarify glucagon physiology and diabetic pathophysiology. With Graeme Bell, he contributed to early work identifying an insulin-gene-region polymorphism associated with type 1 diabetes susceptibility.

His work reached across clinical medicine, hormonal physiology, diabetes genetics, medical education, and care.
