Preserve the observation first.
Before changing the apparatus, the original measurement record should be preserved: instrument output, mode, units, timestamps, connections, materials, illumination conditions, and contemporaneous notes. A screenshot can illustrate a reading but should not replace an available raw record.
The October 15 announcement does not publish these details. Their absence from this page is not evidence that no private record exists; it defines the limit of what a visitor can verify here.
All comparisons below are proposed. We will not mark a control complete, assign a confidence level, or show a measured trace without the corresponding record.
Compare the explanations.
| Comparison | Question it helps test | Interpretation limit |
|---|---|---|
| Living apparatus versus a matched no-organism condition | Is there a response associated with adding the living component? | Changing the medium or electrode history at the same time can confound the comparison. |
| Illuminated versus dark conditions | How does the response change with illumination? | Darkness is not a universal “biology off” control; temperature changes need attention. |
| Electrode and medium blanks | Could the materials or chemistry contribute without the living culture? | A blank must match the relevant materials, configuration, and history. |
| Instrument baseline and known reference | Can the measurement chain resolve the effect reliably? | A reference checks the instrument chain, not biological attribution. |
| Independent repeat runs | Does the observation persist across separate runs? | Repeated samples from one trace are not automatically independent experiments. |
The exact order, replication count, and acceptance criteria should be chosen after reviewing the original apparatus and its measurement uncertainty. Published cyanobacterial work is a reminder that light and respiratory processes can overlap.[2]
Check the meter, not just the organism.
At small currents and high source impedances, leakage, input bias, connections, shielding, and environmental changes can influence the reading. Manufacturer guidance explains why the measurement circuit itself belongs in the investigation.[5]
For FieldLab, that means retaining the instrument settings and identifying what uncertainty or artifact could plausibly account for a response. The useful comparison is between the observed difference and the uncertainty of the full measurement—not between the reading and zero on a display.
Voltage, current, charge, energy, power.
A voltage alone is not a power measurement. For voltage and current measured at the same load, instantaneous electrical power is P = V × I. Delivered energy is the time integral of power; charge transfer is the time integral of current. The calculator below uses constant input values only and does not estimate net energy or efficiency.
What do your measurements imply?
For constant voltage and current at the same load: P = V × I; E = P × t; Q = I × t. For changing signals, integrate synchronized measurements instead.
Enter your own values. No Helios measurements are preloaded.
No efficiency, net-generation, biological-attribution, or independent validation conclusion follows from this calculation.
This distinction matters before describing any future result as “usable power.” Lighting, measurement bias, auxiliary equipment, storage, and chemical contributions would need separate accounting. A nonzero calculated load power does not prove that the whole system has a positive net output.
What would justify the next claim?
Reported response → characterized observation
Identify the observable, units, baseline, duration, instrument settings, and uncertainty in a traceable record.
Observation → repeatable difference
Demonstrate a repeatable difference from matched controls using an appropriate independent-run design.
Repeatable difference → supported mechanism
Test competing explanations with conditions chosen to discriminate between them.
Mechanism → useful function
Measure a defined load or sensing function, operating duration, inputs, maintenance, and relevant alternatives.
These are decision gates, not promised completion dates. A result that weakens a favored explanation can still be progress if it makes the next experiment more informative.
