Is living electricity worth building? Compare the whole service.

A practical framework for cost and environmental comparisons that survives changing assumptions.

A material can be biological without the finished device being cheaper or lower impact. The fair question is whether it provides a specified service with a better total result than a credible alternative.

Choose one service

Define a functional unit such as one sensor-year at a stated sampling interval, transmission schedule and availability. Compare a living cell, a suitable battery, and a photovoltaic-plus-storage option against that same service. Count replacements, visits and missed operation consistently.

Separate two questions

Techno-economic analysis estimates costs under stated assumptions. Life-cycle assessment examines environmental burdens across a defined lifecycle and impact categories. An energy estimate alone is not a complete carbon inventory, and a low carbon estimate does not prove low cost.

The U.S. Department of Energy's TECHTEST combines early-stage TEA and LCA methods for scenario comparisons, using user inputs and public data to describe lifetime cost and energy profiles. Its availability does not mean this project has completed an assessment.

Make the unknowns visible

For MaxwellX, important inputs include manufacturing yield, electrode lifetime, delivered energy, replacement frequency, maintenance travel and end-of-life handling. Until measured, enter ranges and mark their provenance. Show which assumption changes the preferred option; do not hide it behind a single score.

Primary institutional source: DOE TECHTEST documentation. Documentation inspected; workbook not executed. No MaxwellX cost advantage, lifecycle carbon result, payback period or superiority to silicon PV has been validated.
